Measure the width of the rod from left to right.

A common rule for displaying curtains properly says the curtains finished width should be at least 2 times the width of your window(if not more - sheers can be 3 times the window width) to achieve a look of proper fullness.

Example: If your window measures 36" wide, you need curtains that will give a minimum width of 72". In this case 2 50-60" panels will give about 100" to 120" of width which will look nice and full. Always round up to the next full number.

Common Fullness multipliers (multiply by your measured width ):

  • Standard Fullness: width x2
  • Deluxe Fullness: width x2.5
  • Ultra Fullness: width x3

DROP (HEIGHT)

Measure the drop of the window or area you want to cover from top to bottom.Overall curtain drop, anywhere from the sill to the apron or to the floor is a personal preference and need not be exact.

By moving your rod up or down a little you can adjust the position of the curtain at your window.

WIDTH

On most curtains & window treatments, it takes two to three times more material/curtain to provide the proper fullness in appearance when installed/hanging on rod than the actual window width.

FAQs

How to make blackout curtains work better? ›

I always recommend hanging your curtains high and wide. That means you want to mount your rod high above your window casing (this often means close to the ceiling) and 8”-12” beyond the window casing on each side.

Are blackout curtains enough? ›

Blackout curtains can improve your sleep by reducing light exposure, but they may not fully solve sleep deficiencies and disorders. Other strategies that you can use to boost your sleep hygiene include: Banning smartphones and other devices that emit harmful blue light from the bedroom.

Can you double up on blackout curtains? ›

And you can simply draw the second, opaque layer when you need room darkening and extra privacy. Design the two layers of curtains as a combination of two solid colors or a solid and a pattern. You can change the entire visual appeal of the room by just drawing the blackouts open or close.

Why is my room still bright with blackout curtains? ›

Granted, there are times when light can still spill in around the curtains, which may be more than just a little annoying. To fix this, the answer is obvious — all you need to do is utilize a few well-placed thumbtacks to address any areas where light might be getting in.

What are the disadvantages of blackout curtains? ›

Reasons to avoid blackout curtains

So not only do you need a strong curtain rod that's securely fixed to the wall, but you need adequate space on either side of the window for the curtains to hang nicely when they're open. And in some rooms where space is tight, this might not work.

Which side should blackout curtains face? ›

Black out linings can be sewn into a curtain like any other lining. You just need to remember to face the fabric side to the window and the coated side to the fabric.

How to put sheer and blackout curtains on the same rod? ›

To hang the curtains, measure the length of the curtains and then hang them on the rod, making sure to evenly space the panels. You may want to hang the blackout curtains slightly lower than the sheer curtains, to ensure the blackout curtains completely cover the window.

How much bigger than window should blackout curtains be? ›

Step by Step Guide to Measuring Your Window

Remember, you'll need your curtain's width to be 1.5 to 2 times this measurement for full coverage. Measure the Height: Next, measure the height of your window from the top of the frame to the windowsill or the floor, depending on where you want your curtain to end.

How low should blackout curtains hang? ›

For the appearance of taller ceilings and a larger window, mount the curtain rod close to the ceiling, 8-12 inches above or as high up as possible. The curtains' bottom edge should lightly graze the floor wherever it falls.

How much overlap do I need for blackout curtains? ›

It's crucial to select curtain panels that are wider than your window frame to create ample overlap. Generally, adding an extra 12 to 24 inches of curtain width helps ensure better coverage and prevents light from sneaking through the gaps.

How do you make blackout curtains block more light? ›

The further on the wall around the window you overlap the curtain, the more light you block out. Or you could tack the curtain edges to the wall. I'd try these two ways before building some kind of frame. Use black silk interlayer blackout cloth.

How do you spruce up black curtains? ›

The simplest manner to dress up your black drapery panels is to add colorful tiebacks to the sides. This will add a splash of color and lighten the mood. You can choose a pattern with just a bit of black in it or a solid color that you love in a bright and vibrant hue.

How can I make my curtains more effective? ›

For maximum effectiveness, install a cornice at the top of a drapery or place the drapery against the ceiling. Then seal the drapery at both sides and overlap it in the center. You can use Velcro or magnetic tape to attach drapes to the wall at the sides and bottom. Taking these steps will further reduce heat loss.

Why are blackout curtains so stiff? ›

Bear in mind that this top window treatment may also result in some natural light being lost when you most want it though. Blackout lining is a laminated polycotton and is quite stiff and heavy. Curtains and blinds that are made using this light-blocking lining don't tend to drape or fold as nicely.
