Santa Fe Springs, which is Spanish for “holy faith,” was first applied to mineral springs purchased by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway from Dr. James E. Fulton in 1886.
Before its incorporation on May 15, 1957, Santa Fe Springs had a vibrant past that brought the area to prominence several times throughout its history.
The term swap meet (with swap meaning “ to exchange, barter, or trade”) appears to have been in use since at least the late 1940s and early 1950s, though the concept predates it. Noted and long-running swap meet, the Paramount Swap Meet in Paramount, California, says it started in 1955.
1. Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the US. Established way back in 1607, Santa Fe first became a capital three years later, making it both the oldest capital city in the country and the oldest European settlement west of the Mississippi.
Founded in 1610 by Gov. Don Pedro de Peralta, it was named Villa Real de la Santa Fé de San Francisco de Asis (Spanish: “Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi”) and developed around a central plaza.
In Santa Fe, city officials embarked on a different approach with the realization that it was already beautiful, and owned a unique and historic “Santa Fe Style” that just needed codifying. “The City Different” represented Santa Fe's departure from the norm.
